Bootja Bootja spent her youth playing at the waterhole of Kangingarra at the northern reaches of the Canning Stock Route. She then walked in from the desert as a teenager to Tjumundora, one of the early mission sites, before moving to the Old Mission at Balgo. Bootja Bootja's eldest son, Mathew Gill, with her husband, important founding artist Mick Gill Tjakamarra, together with Sister Alice Dempsey, started the interest art in the 1980s. Bootja Bootja was one of the first women painters at Balgo and began exhibiting in 1989.
