Mena, as she is known, was born in the Pound near Balgo Community, grew up in Balgo, attending the government school in Balgo. When she was 18 Mena went to boarding school in Broome for 3 years and then started working at the Adult Education Centre in Balgo. In the late 1980’s she moved to Kiwirrkurra with her husband Brandy Tjungerrayi (deceased) a senior lawman and painter in Balgo. When Kiwirkurra flooded in March 2001 Mena and her family moved back to Balgo and have lived here ever since. After her move to Balgo, Philomena started painting for Warlayirti Artists. In 2004 she started as a Teachers Assistant at the Luurnpa Catholic School in Balgo.
