Artist : CYNTHIA NANALA
Title : Wilkinkarra
Size/Medium : 501 x 701 mm : acrylic on canvas Painting
BIOGRAPHY
Cynthia is closely connected to two of the important families of painters at Balgo. She is a daughter of Tjumpo Tjapangangka and Ningie Nanala, and she is married to Manuel Mudjedell, a son of Mati (Bridget) Mudjedell.
Paintings done by Cynthia are often well finished and rich in strong fields of colour, with deeply contrasting line work. They have an engaging appeal, considering that the artist is still very much in the developmental stage of her career.
ABOUT THIS PAINTING
Cynthia Nanala has painted part of her father Tjumpo’s (dec.) traditional country, which is centred around the vast salt lake known as Wilkinkarra, or Lake Mackay. Her father was a senior custodian for Wilkinkarra.
Wilkinkarra is situated far to the south of Balgo, in the Great Sandy Desert, and is at the heart of many important stories.
This painting depicts Wilkinkarra at the centre, surrounded by the tali, or sand dunes, which dominate the area’s landscape. Around the lake, yellow and white flowers bloom during the right season.
Tjumpo was a senior artist at Warlayirti and taught Cynthia his painting style, passing on many stories of his Country.
