Millie Skeen

Biography

Millie was born in her grandparents’ country, some 300 kilometres south of Balgo. She travelled to the Balgo area as a young girl with her sister, Rita Kuninyi, and Rita’s husband, Albert Nagomara (father of Helen Nagomara), both of whom were important Balgo artists. Millie later married Tommy Skeen Tjakamarra, a gentle Ngardi man who was one of the bosses for the country to the immediate south of Balgo. Millie began painting in 1986, and her paintings have a celebratory air. In 1989, Millie danced at the Shinju Matsuri Festival in Perth.
