Elena has painted a story passed to her by her mother, accomplished painter Shirley Yoomarie.
Karntimula tells the story of the formation of Wolfe Creek Crater. The women, seen moving through Country hunting and gathering as the u-shapes at the bottom of the painting, were digging for karnti (bush potatoes) when a big star fell from the sky. The men, hunting elsewhere, saw this star fall also, and a great snake rise up out of the earth and into the waterway which was to become Sturt Creek. The men waited for the women to come back from gathering karnti, but they did not return.
