Artist : JANE GIMME
Title : Kunawarritji
Size/Medium : 914 x 610mm: acrylic on linen Painting
Jane has painted her mother’s traditional country, and the place in which she grew up – Kunawarritji, or Well 33 on the the Canning Stock Route. Shown here are the tali (sand dunes) which dominate the landscape of the area, with the tjurrnu (soakwater) represented by each brown circle. This painting depicts the story of kinyu- an ancestral spirit dog. Kinyu used to light fires so that fresh mangarri (bush foods) can grow. Jane says that this story is from the tjukurrpa, but it is still happening now. “You can still see that smoke, and you know its kinyu lighting fires.”
Jane says that all her family were walking around this area in groups. Her three uncles and her mother would travel across this country.
