Cindy has painted her Grandmother’s story and Country, known as Nakarra Nakarra.
This painting depicts both place and story for some strong women’s country to the south of Balgo. This country is known as Nakarra Nakarra, and is located in the Great Sandy Desert. Nakarra Nakarra consists of a series of small hills, which in the Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) were all characters in various stories. One of the main stories for this area is the Seven Sisters story, in which seven young sisters are chased by an older man, intent on marrying the youngest. The circles depict these hills, while the shapes hanging off those hills show the designs used in women’s body painting at times of ceremony and celebration.
