Lirrwati by James Nanala
Artist : James Nanala
Title : Lirrwati
Size/Medium : 610 x 457mm: acrylic on canvas Painting
James paints his mother’s Country, Lirrwarti near Piparr. This is Country where his mother, Ningie Nanala, spent her formative years before she walked solo, all the way to Balgo Mission a teenager. On an epic Return to Country camp to Wilkinkarra (James’ father’s Country), we visited Lirrwati, for James it was the first time walking on his ancestral land. After the camp, he spent a long time thinking about that Country. He now feels he is ready to paint and tell that story for himself, to make his parents proud. Here James depicts the kiliki (creek) and yinta (living water) that never goes dry, surrounded by an abundance of mangarri (bush foods) in the area including kantilli and pintalypa (tomato), and kanpurrpa (raisins).
