Rex has painted his Grandfather’s country near Wilkinkarra. This place is called Wanuru, or Dwarf Well.
Rex visited Wanuru for the first time on our return to country camp to Wilkinkarra in 2022. It was the first time Rex had been shown this country. For a long time he had been travelling up and down the road, between Balgo and Kiwirrkurra, but never knew to stop at that place. So close but not until this camp that he saw it.
Rex says Ït was really proper way. Old people took me there, told me all the stories. So I really know this place now. I’ve been come back to Balgo and tell all my family that I visted and it made my spirit so happy.”
The central circle is Wanuru, a soak water. The radiating lines represent the different plants and seeds found nearby. The singular yellow band represents a large tali (sandhill) where the soakwater is found behind.
