Artist : JANE GIMME
Title : Kinyu
Size/Medium : 900 x 900mm: heat set paint on silk Fabric
Jane has painted her mother’s traditional country, and the place in which she grew up – Kunawarritji, or Well 33 on the the Canning Stock Route. Shown here are the tali (sand dunes) which dominate the landscape of the area, with the tjurrnu (soakwater) Kunawarritji in the centre. The brown circles depict the holes where the ancestral spirit dog, Kinyu lived and its pups. During hard times when there was no kuka (meat) or mangarri (vegetable food) the old people would ask Kinyu for food and we would provide kangaroo or bush turkey, anything you wanted. This painting depicts women travelling through the land looking for the food.
