James Nanala has painted some of his father’s traditional country, which is centred around the vast salt lake known as Wilkinkarra, or Lake Mackay. His father was a senior custodians for Wilkinkarra. Wilkinkarra is situated far to the south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert and is at the centre of many important stories. This painting depicts Wilkinkarra surrounded by the tali, or sand dunes which dominate the landscape of the area. James visited Wilkinkarra for the first time in 2022 as part of our Connection to Country camp with the Nanala and Sunfly families.
