Hayley is the grand-daughter of well-known and esteemed painter Mati Mudgedell. In this painting, Hayley paints her grandmother’s story. Depicting the Ngardi country to the south of Yaka Yaka, the central circle references the lake called Kuna Kulu which is a popular hunting ground. On either side of Kuna Kulu, represented by the U shapes are women sitting by the fire. By one fire there are two Nungarayis with their mother, Nakamarra and by another fire are two Napanangkas and their mother, Nampitjin. The various dots represent the numerous bush-tucker that is found in this area, and that which the women had been collecting. Through her grandmother’s story, Carmen tells of Kuna Kulu and its abudance of life-sustaining resources.
