Winpurpurla by KATHY YUKENBARRI
Artist : KATHY YUKENBARRI
Title : Winpurpurla
Size/Medium : 610 x 457mm: acrylic on canvas Painting
Kathy has painted part of her mother’s Country, located south of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert.
This Country is called Winpurpurla, named after the tjurnnu (soakwater), depicted as the central circle in the painting. Winpurpurla is a yinta—a ‘living water’ site—meaning it is a permanent and reliable source of fresh water.
Women often travel to this place to gather bush foods, including lukarrari seeds, which are ground to make damper, and kumpupatja (bush tomato). The strong, flowing lines in the painting represent the tali (sandhills) that sweep across this landscape, shaping its form and life.
